The scent of incense hangs in the air; Turkish delight tickles your taste buds and the jingle of bells around the ankles of our beautiful heroine, Scheherazade, signals the beginning of a magical adventure.

Weaving expressive movement, poetic text and an enchanting score composed by Thomas Johnson, this new adaptation, directed by Greg Banks, is a magic carpet ready to whisk you away from the familiarity of your local village hall to the warmth and magic of ancient Arabia.

The company worked with Gloucester’s Muslim community throughout the production process. This started with a research and development week during Ramadan in which local children worked with the professional team to devise a performance based on one of the stories of the Arabian Nights. Ideas from that week fed into the professional production and we have also collaborated with local Muslim artists and costumiers to give the design its authenticity.

Arabian Nights, touring nationwide from November – Christmas 2011, is the perfect autumn treat, offering something for everyone; a family show that appeals to adults as much as to kids (suitable for 7+).

To book, please check our tour dates in this listing or via the calendar on the home page.

Are you a young Asian/Indian or Middle Eastern with acting ambitions looking for your lucky break? If the answer is yes, you could be the star of a national touring show.

Fairgame Theatre is searching for actors to play the starring roles of Sinbad and Scheherazade in their new production of Arabian Nights. Rather than going down the usual route of casting calls and agencies, Fairgame has opted to seek out new talent in the community where they work.

Training and professional acting experience is not necessary, but applicants will be required to display ability in acting and preferably singing, as well as commitment and availability for the rehearsal and tour dates (shown below).

The successful pair will receive full mentoring support and training from the professional members of the company: Director, Greg Banks; Musical Director, Thomas Johnson; Artistic Director of Fairgame, Sarah Blowers and Actor/Consultant, Adil Javed (star of ‘Four Lions’ and Channel 4’s ‘Brits’).

Fairgame is completely committed to providing employment in their local area and both of these roles will be paid positions.

To apply for this unique opportunity, please send us an email stating why you are interested. Please include your details (name, age, address, email and phone) and a recent photo of yourself, if you have one. Please note that you will need to be available for the following dates:

  • Rehearsals: Mon 3rd Oct – Fri 28th Oct 2011
  • National Tour: Sun 30th Oct – Sat 24th Dec 2011

Applicants also need to meet the following requirements:

  • Age: 17-25
  • Ethnicity: Asian/Indian or Middle Eastern
  • Address: Glos

All suitable applicants will be considered and invited to audition (date to be confirmed).

‘Friday Night’ Alcohol Awareness Project was funded by The Midcounties Co-operative. It takes an honest, open look at underage drinking and youth binge drinking.

A group of young people from CCP (a Foyer project for homeless young people in Cheltenham) and Balcarras School worked together over the course of one week. They talked about their own experiences of alcohol, made a music video of up and coming Hip Hop artist A Dott’s single, ‘Friday Night’ and a series of documantaries based on various interviews with a range of people from health professionals and the police to members of the public about their experiences and opinions about alcohol.

The DVD is now being used as part of an education pack going out with workshops to schools. Please see ‘Friday Night’ Alcohol Awareness Project – Workshops for details

Friday Night

May 25th, 2011

The ‘Friday Night’ Alcohol Awareness Project is funded by The Midcounties Co-operative. It takes an honest, open look at underage drinking and youth binge drinking.

In 2010 a group of young people completed a music video and documentary (see ‘Friday Night’ Alcohol Awareness Project – DVD for more details). This now forms part of an education pack to accompany an effective workshop led by Fairgame’s Sarah Blowers and rapper, Adott, who performs his single, ‘Friday Night’ as part of the day and helps the young people write their own raps about alcohol.

“It was a completely different approach to alcohol awareness and very succesful. The students really linked with Adott and it created a real buzz.” Adrian Parker, PSHE at Sutherland Business and Enterprise College
